Cubs go with eight-man pen, Bourjos released

Joe Maddon has decided that they will go with an eight-man bullpen to start the season. After the release of Justin Grimm, many wondered about who would potentially fill his place. Right now it looks to be Brandon Morrow, Pedro Strop, Carl Edwards, Brian Duensing, Steve Cishek, Mike Montgomery and Justin Wilson to be the guys in the pen. Obviously injuries happen so some will go in and out, but the opening day projection will probably be that with Morrow as the closer.

The last spot that was once occupied by Grimm will most likely be filled in by RHP Eddie Butler, who can pitch multiple innings and spot-start. Does not seem at all likely they will bring in veteran Greg Holland, who is still a free agent. Guys like Dillon Maples and Jen-Ho Tseng will probably be call-ups at some point this season, but were clearly not ready to start the season in the majors.

Another roster move was made as veteran outfielder Peter Bourjos was just released. Bourjos wants a shot at a major league roster spot, which was not going to happen with the Cubs. He had a good spring, .326/.362/.734 in 18 games, but unless a major injury occurred in the outfield there was now way he was going to make the opening day roster.

Bourjos is a career .241/.298/.382 hitter and would be used for nothing more than pinch-running/defensive substitutions late in a game. Just was not worth a roster spot on a team with so much depth.
