Chicago Cubs Weekly Recap: Punched in the gut…repeatedly

By: Alex Patt

The Chicago Cubs returned home in the early hours of the morning Monday from St. Louis after being swept in painful fashion. After taking the lead in the 14 inning, with two outs and nobody on the Cardinals rallied and won on Dexter Fowler’s walk-off home run. A former hero sent to the Cubs to the pit of misery. The walk-off loss sent the Cubs on a five-game losing streak, which luckily ended on Monday night with a 14-2 win over Miami.

Cubs-Cardinals had for the most part been fun for the boys in blue going back to mid-2015, but that was not the case this weekend. Twice saves were blown and what could have been a 2/3 series win was all for not. After falling 3-2 on Friday, the Cubs had a 6-4 lead in the ninth before Marcell Ozuna’s two-run double tied it and sent it to extras. Kolton Wong hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the tenth. That game saw the Cubs lose an early 4-0 lead thanks to walks and misplays in the field.

From their last game against the Indians a few weeks ago through the series finale in St. Louis, the Cubs scored more than three runs in a game once. They totaled 26 runs in 10 games before Monday and batted .202/.242/.344 as a team/ Anthony Rizzo, Willson Contreras, Jason Heyward, Addison Russell and Ian Happ had been struggling for a while at the plate. Luckily Happ and Russell had big nights Monday, including a two-home run and five RBI performance from Happ. Hopefully that can build some confidence. Overall the offense is trying to find consistency and key guys trying to get out of slumps.

One interesting stat that was mentioned on the ESPN broadcast and has been circulating on Twitter is that Jason Heyward, who is slashing .227/.315/.340 this year has zero hits on non-fastball pitches. This was brought up during the game before he had a hit in the late innings. A stat that probably a lot of people did not realize.

The Cubs will finish this series with Miami and then welcome in the South Siders for a three-game set this coming weekend.
